GOLD STANDARD
Newly available from your consultant or GP: From a single sample there is now a triple-combination test using the new technique of liquid-based cytology which, in addition to your routine smear, tests for HPV and chlamydia.
Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease and can occur at any age. Most sexually active adults have been infected with HPV at some point in their lives. Most will never know because there are no symptoms and the body fights it off. But if it lingers in the cervix, HPV can cause changes that will lead to cervical cancer. Therefore, testing for HPV alongside the routine cervical smear test identifies women who are at risk, is reassuring for those who are low risk, and helps reduce missed disease caused by false negative smear tests.
Chlamydia is an infection of the reproductive organs. It is a common condition and there are no clear risk factors. It often occurs in young adults; simply changing sexual partners can put anyone at risk. If chlamydia is not diagnosed soon after infection, complications may occur in both men and women. In females, symptoms include vaginal discharge, burning when passing urine and lower abdominal pain. Infection may also be present in the throat and rectum. In both of these sites, there are usually no symptoms. If chlamydia is not treated, conditions may arise which may result in infertility or ectopic pregnancy. However, it can be simply and effectively treated.
