Laboratory Operations Manager
Neil Barrett FIBMS CSci

Neil began his career in 1977 as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup. He left in 1984 to join an independent laboratory and became a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences in 1987. He became Laboratory Manager in 1996, a post that he held until 2001 when he left to join IHS Ltd in the same role. In 2004 he became a Charted Scientist and has attained four diplomas in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) from the institute of Biomedical Sciences. He became a CPA assessor in 2004 and his current role is Laboratory Operations Manager. As a senior manger, he has taken on responsibility for organisation and advisory role to two additional laboratories.

This pivotal role involves responsibility for the laboratory operations of IHS Ltd. The post-holder fosters close working relationships between all departmental managers, and the sales and marketing team, to provide professional leadership to all staff and ensure that a consistently high-quality service is provided across the board.

Histology and Cytology Managers
This role involves ensuring the smooth running of each of the departments within IHS, as well as the timely provision of a high-quality service.

Senior Biomedical Scientists
This role is to ensure the timely provision of a high quality service and to ensure the supervision of any trainees and Medical Laboratory Assistants. The primary working relationship is with the departmental manager, and the staff.

Biomedical Scientists
Duties include cutting up specimens, embedding and staining tissue sections for microscopic examination, or screening cytological preparations.

Cytoscreeners
Duties include screening cytological preparations and recording results.

Medical Laboratory Assistant
This involves assisting all staff and helping in the smooth running of the laboratory with particular reference to specimen reception, staining, mounting and filing slides and blocks.

Administrative Staff
This involves providing a secretarial service to the laboratory staff and clients. Primary working relationships are with the office manager and departmental laboratory managers.
